Security deposits

When a deposit is required, how it is held, and when you get it back.

What a deposit is

Some trips require a refundable security deposit. At checkout you will see a line such as “a refundable security deposit is held on your card (not charged) and released after your trip.”

How it works

  1. The deposit amount is authorized on your card when you book.
  2. It stays on hold while the trip is active.
  3. After the trip ends and the host has had the chance to review the return, the hold is released.

When a deposit can be used

If you owe the host or Seifly for something covered by the Terms, such as excessive cleaning, smoking in the car, an undeclared pet, a late return, low fuel or charge, or extra miles, the host can file a charge with photos or a bill as evidence. You are notified of the charge. Charges are capped by type and are meant to cover genuine costs only. Anything not used is released.
