Tolls, extra miles, and other trip charges
The charges a host can file after your trip, the evidence they must provide, and how to respond.
Updated October 10, 2026
After a trip, a host can file a charge for costs that came from how the car was used. Every charge must fall into a type below, include a note, and carry evidence.
Charge types
- Tolls. The host uploads the toll bill showing the date, time, location, and plate or transponder number. You see the bill before you are billed.
- Extra miles. If you drove over the limit and the host set a per-mile fee, the host enters the number of miles over.
- Late return. For returning after the agreed time without approval.
- Excessive cleaning. When the car needs more than a normal clean-up.
- Smoking in the car.
- Undeclared pet.
- Low fuel or charge. For returning with less fuel or battery than you started with.
- Other.
Each type has a maximum amount, and only the real cost can be charged. Photos taken at check-in and check-out help to show the car’s condition at each end of the trip.
Your options
- Read the charge and the evidence in your trip page and notifications.
- If you disagree, message the host and contact support from the trip’s help tools with your own photos and the saved inspection reports.
How to avoid them
- Return the car with the same fuel or charge level, unless you agreed otherwise.
- Return on time. If you are going to be late, ask the host for an extension through Seifly messages before the end time.
- Take thorough photos at the start and end of every trip.
