Fuel and charging
What level to return the car at and how low-fuel charges work.
Updated October 10, 2026
Unless you and the host agreed otherwise, you return the car with a similar fuel or battery level to the one you started with. The level is recorded in the check-in and check-out.
- Photograph the fuel gauge or battery percentage at the start and the end.
- Refuel or recharge shortly before you return the car, and keep the receipt.
- If you return with less than you started with, the host can file a low fuel or charge charge, with evidence.
- Use the fuel type the listing says. The wrong fuel can cause serious damage and cost you.
Agreed something different? Put it in writing in the trip messages, for example “you return it at 25% and I will not charge”.
