Check-in and pickup
What happens at the handoff, including the photo inspection that protects you.
Updated October 10, 2026
Pickup is the most important five minutes of your trip. The check-in is how you and the host agree on the condition the car is in before you drive it.
Before you leave home
- Have your driver’s license with you. The host must confirm it is current, matches the name on the reservation, and appears to match you.
- Check your messages for the exact handoff details.
- Charge your phone, because you will take photos.
At the car
- Walk around the car with your host (or alone, if the handoff is keyless).
- Open the check-in on your trip page and take the photos asked for. Cover all sides, the wheels, windshield, interior, and any existing scratches or dents.
- Record the fuel or battery level and the odometer reading.
- Submit the check-in. It is saved to the trip with a time stamp.
If the host recorded the check-in
Sometimes the host records the check-in photos. In that case you are asked to review them. See Reviewing and approving the host’s inspection.
If something is wrong
If the car is dirty, damaged, or unsafe, do not start the trip. See Car is dirty, damaged, or unsafe at pickup.
