Driving an electric or hybrid car

Charging, range, and handoff tips for first-time EV drivers.

Updated October 10, 2026

  • Ask your host how to charge the car, which cable or adapter is included, and how to open the charge port.
  • Plan charging stops on a long drive, because chargers are sometimes busy or broken.
  • Record the battery percentage at check-in and check-out.
  • Keep the cable in the car and return it.
  • If the car uses app-based access, see Keyless entry and app-based access.

Your host can explain any charging costs they expect you to cover. Charging costs you incur on the road are yours to pay, and a battery level lower than where you started can lead to a low-charge charge.
