Taking good check-in and check-out photos
A simple routine that protects you if something is disputed later.
Updated October 10, 2026
Good photos are the best protection you have. They take two minutes and can save you a disagreement.
- Take photos in good light, not in the dark or with glare.
- Photograph all four sides, the front and rear, and each corner.
- Take close-ups of every scratch, dent, chip, or scuff you can find, even small ones, with something for scale.
- Photograph all four wheels and the windshield.
- Photograph the interior: seats, mats, dashboard, and trunk.
- Photograph the odometer and the fuel gauge or battery level.
- Do exactly the same routine at check-out, in the same place, if you can.
