Smoking and pets
What hosts can charge for, and how to avoid it.
Updated October 10, 2026
Smoking
Treat every car as non-smoking unless the listing clearly says otherwise. If a host finds evidence of smoking, such as smell or ash, they can file a smoking charge with photos. This is one of the charge types hosts can use.
Pets
Check the listing’s house rules before you bring an animal. If you bring a pet the host did not know about, they can file an undeclared pet charge, for example for cleaning hair. The simplest way to avoid it is to ask your host first and keep the pet in a carrier or on a blanket.
Service animals
Service animals are treated differently from pets under disability-rights laws. If you travel with one, tell your host in the trip messages. If a host refuses or charges you because of a service animal, contact support at once.
