Legal considerations before you share your car

A checklist of the legal and practical points to check first.

Updated October 10, 2026

Seifly isn’t a rental car company and doesn’t give legal advice. Before you list a car, check these yourself.

  • Insurance. Do you have an auto policy that meets legal minimums, and have you asked your insurer about sharing?
  • Lender or lessor. Does sharing break your loan or lease agreement?
  • Local car-sharing rules. Some cities, counties, and airports require permits, registration, or fees.
  • Business registration and taxes. You’re responsible for your income taxes, and for any business registration your area requires.
  • Housing and parking rules. Check your lease or HOA before you hand over cars at your home.
  • Disclosure. Tell guests about any device that locates, monitors, or records.

You can ask a lawyer or accountant about your situation. Seifly’s host terms set out what you agree to.
